Where to shop for fabric in Melbourne & Adelaide?

Hi fellow bloggers,

Well it's been a long time between drinks around these parts. Months and months and months have past since my last post - seriously slack OR seriously lacking in time. Maybe bit of both. Going into every weekend, I think that this will be the weekend when I actually organise a photo shoot and get all of my creations photographed. Then, Monday morning rolls around and I've missed the boat once again. Maybe, just maybe, this will be the weekend.

Anyway, I'm starting to get a bit excited about my up and coming trip to the great Southern part of this country. Yep, I'm heading south - 3000km south in fact! So, I'm going to find myself with the time to check out fabric stores in Melbourne and Adelaide.

So, I need help putting a bit of a must-go-to guide together. My time in Adelaide will be just a little flit here and a little flit here between family engagements. I will have a car and GPS. Melbourne, on the other hand, will be a solo mission. One whole day, childless, husbandless, with no time restrictions. Just a day to do as I please. I won't have a car, but happy to do the public transport thing.

I have fabric shopped at the following places in Melbourne before - Tessuti, The Fabric Store and Clegs.

So over to you.....what to do and where to go?

Did I mention I'm super excited? Time to rebuild my seriously diminishing stash.

  2. Bernice, send me an email thornberrylara at optusnet dot com dot au - and if I am not working the day you are in Melbourne I may be able to escort you to some fabric shops! I always love Darn Cheap Fabrics in Heidelberg, and you can get there by train - it's also near The Cloth Shop in Ivanhoe (same train line). On the tram you can easily get to Rathdowne Fabrics, Brunswick Clegs and GJs (all on the same tram line within walking distance of one another) and in the city of course are Clegs and Tessuti, and the Fabric Store and Clear It (Alannah Hill) on Brunswick St in Fitzroy. There are other places in different directions - I know the city and north best.

  5. I am just plain jealous of you! Hitting Melbourne for a stashing building spree would just be fabulous - but to be child/hubby/time free - now my eyes are turning green. Hit a shop or two for me ... J

  6. Oh Bernice I do hope you are in Adelaide when The Drapery is open - it's me and my business partner Fiona and we've been in business now almost 6 months! We're at 308A Glen Osmond Rd, Fullarton and we're open Wed - Fri and Sat arvos. More info on our website at thedrapery.com.au - sorry if I totally sound like an ad! The other few places you might like to check out are Catwalk Fabrics (actually I've never been but I think they get quite high fashion remnant kind of stuff), possibly DK Fabrics which is a bit enormous, overwhelming and hit & miss, and Ferriers which is not far from us. Oh and there's Hettie's Patch which has heaps of lovely quilting fabrics but not really anything much for dressmaking, as the name would imply. We opened The Drapery because the fabric shopping in Adelaide was becoming pretty dire! It would be lovely to meet you if you can pop in :)

    1. I'll definitely swing by. I'd already put your shop on my list of must-visits. I've been enjoying watching the developments of your new business even though I've been a crazy slack blogger/commenter. Goodness me, when you go from being a part-timer to a full-timer life gets busy. I'll be in Adelaide between Christmas and New Year. (Not ideal, I know) Hope you're open then! If not, I completely understand that you'd prefer to spend your week with those three, I mean four! adorable boys of yours.

    2. Oh poop - we are planning on closing down for that time! Ah well if you have family here there may be another time. I've been a slack blogger too lately. I hear you on the busy! I hope you have a great holiday anyhow - to be realistic I think you will probably be best off doing your fabric shopping in Melbourne and make Adelaide family time :)

  7. My daughter lives in Brunswick and there seems to be a lot of cheap fabric stores along Sydney road.
